The only man who is educated is the man who has learned how to learn; the man who has learned how to adapt and change; the man who has realized that no knowledge is secure, that only the process of seeking knowledge gives a basis of security. Changingness, a reliance on process rather than upon static knowledge, is th eonly thing that makes any sense as a goal for education in the modern world. ( Carl Rogers - Educator)

CALL Practice and Tools III: Vocabulary and Grammar

How do you want to use corpus data and concordancers for your learning and instruction? Give us your lesson idea in detail. Hmmm...for my language learning, I'd like to use corpus data and conconrdancers by way of improving or enhancing my vocabularies. I just normally use very basic or commonly used words so normally/often I get tired of it. Moreover, when I write essays or diaries, this kind of feeling often comes to me so naturally. The same thing with checking my student's writings. I'd like them to use better or high graded words. An example for this: (Using My Word software) I'd also like to use Wordsmith for giving out vocabulary test to my students. Last time, when I have supervised the vocabs test of English camp students, I found it useless for them because they were not able to apply the words in sentences when speaking or writing since they just memorize the spelling of the words and then write them down knowing the korean meaning. So, from using wordsmith, I'd like to make a different kind of test which is still a vocab test but this time selecting only some of the words they have memorized and do matchmaking and writing them into sentences. Of course, this has always been done ever since, but I think using wordsmith, the work of the teachers will become lighter and faster. As what I have read from the reading articles, it is no doubt that the language learner's grammar skill will improve using concordance rather than previous knowledge like dictionaries and others, but I still find some difficulty trying to find out how to apply it to my lesson (plan/idea) in my own simple, easy yet practical way. Hmmm...give me some more time to hink about this one (what a slow learner am I..kkk) (Never mind these. I just placed this one for my references...) List of uses of concordancing for language teachers How can concordances help teachers of languages? We will go into much greater detail in Section 4, Some practical illustrations, but here we can summarise the uses of concordancers as follows: ***The teacher can use a concordancer to find examples of authentic usage to demonstrate features of vocabulary, typical collocations, a point of grammar or even the structure of a text ***The teacher can generate exercises based on examples drawn from a variety of corpora, for example gap-filling exercises and tests. ***Students can work out rules of grammar or usage and lexical features for themselves by searching for key words in context. Depending on their level, they can be invited to question some of the rules, based on their observation of patterns in authentic language. ***Students can be more active in their vocabulary learning: depending on their level, they can be invited to discover new meanings, to observe habitual collocations, to relate words to syntax, or to be critical of dictionary entries. ***Students can be invited to reflect on language use in general, based on their own explorations of a corpus of data, thus turning themselves into budding researchers Reading Materials: Using Concordance Programs in the Modern Foreign Languages Classroom Fostering Lexis Awareness and Autonomy by Corpus-based Data-Drive Learning
